Triple play highlights baseball teams win over Wilkes

READING, PA - Steven Varner tossed 5.2 strong innings, Zach Reis recorded five RBI, and the defense turned three double plays and one triple play as the Penn State Berks baseball team topped Wilkes University, 13-7, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 6-8 on the year, while the Colonels fall to 5-10 overall.

Berks got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cory Fox and Dalton Hughes started the inning with back-to-back walks and pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third. Reis notched the first of his three hits with a single up the middle to plate Fox and Hughes. Reis later came around to score on a two-out single through the left side of the infield by Damian Mace.

The Colonels broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but Berks countered with a run in their at-bats. Reis collected his third RBI of the game with an infield single that scored Fox, who led off the inning with an infield single.

Austin Madeja led off the third inning with a walk and quickly moved up with a stolen base. Seth Endy struck out swinging at a pitch in the dirt, but with first base open was able to reach safely after the dropped third strike. Troy Salerno was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Fox followed with a double down the left field line to score Madeja and Endy to make the score 6-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, the first two batters reached base for Wilkes via a hit and a Berks error. The next batter smacked a diving line drive to right field that Madeja was able to snag with a shoestring grab. He then came up throwing to Reis at first base to record the second out, who then fired over to Endy to complete the triple play.

The Colonels got a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Berks responded with two of their own in the bottom half. Toby Welk opened up the inning with a double down the right field line and later came around to score on an infield single by Madeja. Tyler Comport, who reached base with a walk, later scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-4.

Berks put the game with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Reis drove in his final two RBI with a line drive to right field to establish a career-high of five runs batted in. Endy had an RBI single and Fox forced in a run with a bases loaded walk in the inning.

Varner earned his first win of the season after scattering 10 hits and allowing four runs, while striking out four batters. He gave up a single to the first batter of the game, but the next batter lined out back to the pitcher and Varner doubled off the runner on first base. In the top of the fourth inning, the Colonels got the leadoff man on with a hit, but the next batter grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

The Colonels chased Varner with two outs in the top of the sixth inning after cutting the score to 6-4 and had a runner on second base. Ryan Tenney came in relief and got out of the jam with a groundout to Endy at short. In the seventh inning, Tenney hit the leadoff batter, but Salerno was able to turn a double play on the next hitter. Mitch Renninger tossed the final 1 2/3 innings to secure the win for the Nittany Lions.

Fox went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two stolen bases, two walks, two RBI, and three runs scored. Reis finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Madeja was 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one RBI, and one run scored.
