Baseball splits home doubleheader with Gettysburg

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team won 5-4 in walk-off fashion in game one, but dropped the nightcap by a score of 7-3 to visiting Gettysburg College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

In the opener, the Bullets (11-7-1) evened the score at 4-all with a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning. Toby Welk started the Nittany Lions (5-8) half of the inning off by roping a double down the left field line. Gettysburg elected to intentionally walk Zach Reis to put runners on first and second, which allowed for a force out at any bag. Tyler Comport strolled to the plate looking to advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt, but was able to turn the sacrifice into a bunt single as the ball was placed perfectly down the third base line. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Damian Mace came through with exactly what the Nittany Lions needed as he lifted a fly to right field that was deep enough for Welk to tag up and score with ease to give Berks the walk-off win.

Dylan Gallagher gave a strong effort on the mound, but did not factor into the decision. The senior right-hander went 6 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing four runs. Mitch Renninger worked the final out of the seventh inning and picked up the win.

Berks did the bulk of its scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Mason Pennypacker smacked a double off the left field wall to score Reis and Mace to give the Nittany Lions an early 2-0 lead. Pennypacker later scored on an infield single by Dalton Hughes. Berks tacked on another run with a single by Comport that scored Cory Fox from second base.

Fox finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Pennypacker and Comport both recorded two hits.

Gettysburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first of the game two and were ahead 5-0 after the second inning. Berks came to life in their final at-bat with back-to-back two out singles by Seth Endy and Guillermo Castillo. Fox loaded the bases with an infield single and Hughes followed with an infield single of his own to make it 7-3. Welk came to the plate looking to keep the rally going with a drive to right center, but the Bullets center fielder was able to track it down for the final out of the game.

Fox and Welk were both 2-for-4, while Austin Madeja went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Mitch Amenta tossed four innings of shutout relief to close out the game. The freshman righty allowed just four hits, while striking out two batters.

The Nittany Lions will host Wilkes University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.
