Comport's game two gem leads Berks to split with Muhlenberg

READING, PA - Tyler Comport turned in the finest pitching performance of his career with six innings of two-hit, shutout ball to lead the Penn State Berks baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Muhlenberg College in the second game of a doubleheader at Hintz Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon. In the first game, the Nittany Lions (4-7) used a two run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extras, but the Mules (7-8) were able to edge Berks by a score of 4-2 in eight innings.

Comport established a new personal best with his 6.0 innings of work, while matching a career-high with four strikeouts. Freshman Cody Fidler finished off the final inning with three up and three down to secure his first collegiate save. Comport limited the Mules to just four base runners (two hits, two hit batters) all day and allowed just two runners to get into scoring position for the game.

In the top of the fifth inning, shortstop Mason Pennypacker fielded a ball deep up the middle and flipped to Troy Salerno at second base, who then relayed to first for a double play. An inning later, the Mules put Comport in his largest jam of the game with runners on first and second base with just one out. But the junior right-hander got a line out to Pennypacker at short, who then raced to tag second base for the inning ending double play.

The Nittany Lions tacked on their first run of the game in the second inning. Zach Reis lined a single to right field to lead things off and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Hughes. Dylan Gallagher followed with a line drive single to left field to score Reis from second base.

Pennypacker led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double down the right field line and moved up to third base on a beautiful bunt single by Salerno. Cory Fox followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to easily score Pennypacker from third.

In the opening game, Reis fired 7 1/3 strong innings and Comport threw the final 2/3 of the eighth. Reis scattered 10 hits and surrendered four runs (three earned), while striking out two batters.

The offense was kept off balance and held to just three hits over the first six innings. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Hughes drew a one-out walk and two batters later Damian Mace was walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Seth Endy broke up the shutout with an RBI single just over the shortstops head in shallow left field. Salerno followed with a double to right field that scored pinch runner Pennypacker from second base to tie the game at 2-all. Fox was walked to load the bases and Austin Madeja followed with a sharp grounder up the middle, but the shortstop made a game saving stop and got the force at second to end the inning.

In extras, the Mules got a seeing eye single through the left side of the infield with bases loaded to jump ahead 3-2. They tacked on another run when a come-backer deflected off Comport's glove for a bases loaded single.

Endy started a pair of inning ending 6-4-3 double plays in the top of the fifth and seventh innings.

In the two games combined, Salerno was 3-for-4 with one RBI. The senior second baseman has a four-game hitting streak and has recorded at least one hit in seven games this season.

The Nittany Lions will host Gettysburg College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, March 26. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
