Baseball falls on the road to McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, MD - The Penn State Berks baseball team returned to action for the first time in two weeks with a 7-4 setback to McDaniel College in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (3-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the home squad responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Green Terror (6-8) tacked on two more runs in the third and another in the fourth to build a 7-2 advantage. Berks was able to get runners on base in the later half of the game, but could only put across single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

Cory Fox opened the game with a single to left center field and moved up to second on a walk by Dalton Hughes. Toby Welk failed to get the sacrifice bunt down on his first two attempts before laying down a perfect bunt down the third base line and beating it out for a single to load the bases. Tyler Comport followed with a single to center field that drove in Fox and Hughes.

In the bottom half of the inning, McDaniel had four hits and took advantage of one Berks error to push four runs across the plate with just one out recorded. They had a runner on second base and looked poised to score more runs, but Steven Varner forced a line out to second baseman Troy Salerno, who then flipped to shortstop Mason Pennypacker at second base for an inning ending double play.

Varner settled in after the tough start and went 5.0 innings. The senior left-hander scattered nine hits and allowed seven runs - four earned - with five strikeouts and just one walk. Mitch Renninger tossed three innings of shutout relieve to keep the Nittany Lions within striking distance down the stretch. The senior right-hander gave up just two hits, while matching a career-best with five strikeouts.

Comport finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Salerno had a 2-for-4 showing. Zach Reis roped a triple in the eighth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Gallagher. Gallagher recorded an RBI earlier in the game with a groundout in the sixth inning. Pennypacker had one hit and added a stolen base.

The Nittany Lions will host its home opener with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg College on Saturday, March 25 at 1 p.m.
