Women's basketball tops Gallaudet, 64-61

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team held off a late rally to pick up a thrilling 64-61 victory on the road over Gallaudet University in Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest.

The Nittany Lions (6-11, 6-9 NEAC) led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter and carried a six point advantage into the halftime break. Berks was able to extend its lead to 12 points early in the start of the second half, but the Bison (2-19, 2-15 NEAC) were able to cut their deficit to just one point by the end of the third quarter. Gallaudet grabbed a brief one point lead, 49-48, with 9:40 left in regulation and the teams were tied at 51-all, before Berks jumped out to a five point lead. The lead was as much as six points for the Nittany Lions with just ove a minute left, but the a couple of Bison jumpers made it a one-possession game at 63-61 with seven seconds to go. Mackenzie Huber went 1-for-2 at the line with 1.2 seconds on the clock and the Bison were unable to get off an attempt as time expired.

Deanna Daddona notched the second double-double of her career after recording 24 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and a blocked shot in 40 minutes of action. The sophomore guard raised her season total to 394 points, which is the ninth most in a single-season in school history, and raised her scoring average to 23.2 points per game.

Daddona knocked down a team-high four 3-pointers, followed by Huber and Sam Brensinger with three each. Huber finished the game with 12 points and Brensinger chipped in 11 points to go with a six assists and a career-high seven steals. Sam Huggins added six points and a team-high 14 rebounds, while Britt Weiss came off the bench to add eight points and six boards.

Kori Koss led all scorers with 25 points to pace the Bison, while Kelli Barnes chipped in 16 points. Kelsey Hudson and Lawjen Ashmore both registered eight points and 11 boards.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a home game against Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday, February 8 at 6 p.m. They will be teaming up with the men's team to sponsor a "Pink Game" Fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
