Nittany Lions rally falls short against Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team had its rally fall short in an 80-74 setback on the road to SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday night at Iorio Gymnasium.

The Nittany Lions (6-17, 6-13 NEAC) went ahead 15-14 after a 3-pointer by Eli Adams with 9:06 left in the first half, but that was the last time they would lead the rest of the way. The Fighting Tigers went on 17-2 run over the next five minutes to build a comfortable advantage and eventually took a 43-27 lead into the halftime intermission. The teams exchanged baskets early in the second half before Berks went off for 17 unanswered points and trailed 49-47 with 11:51 to play. Slowly, the lead crept back up to 14 points in Cobleskill's favor with just under five minutes left. With the score 76-65 and 1:08 left to go, Baba Waples knocked down a pair of free throws, Darren Major put in a lay-up, and Adams drilled a 3-pointer to pull within four points with 37 seconds left. Unfortunately for Berks, the effort was too little, too late as the Fighting Tigers were able to hold off the Nittany Lions down the stretch.

Waples connected on four 3-pointers and went 9-for-11 at the free throw line to finish with a contest-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Major chipped in 14 points, while Nelson Hine notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Hine also recorded a game-high six assists. Eric Stepnowski had  a career-high and team-best 11 rebounds, while Joel Ellison matched Hine with 10 boards.

Joel Costello led Cobleskill with 18 points, followed by Malik Chambers with 16. Christian Cooper (14), Quincey Miller (13), and Kahleel Taylor (12) rounded out Fighting Tigers scoring in double figures. Costello also recorded a game-high 13 boards, while Cooper grabbed 11.

With the loss, the Nittany Lions find themselves eliminated from the hunt for the final playoff spot in the conference tournament. They will wrap up the 2016-17 season with a NEAC contest at SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday, February 18 at 3 p.m.
