Men's basketball falls to SUNY Poly in season finale

MARCY, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team closed out the 2016-17 season with an 123-90 setback to SUNY Polytechnic in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions finish the season with an overall record of 6-18 and went 6-14 in the conference, while SUNY Poly improves to 19-6 on the season and 16-2 in the NEAC.

Berks will bid farewell to a strong senior class of Baba Waples, Darren Major, and Joel Ellison. Waples finished the game with a team-high in points and a career-high in rebounds to record the third double-double of his career with a 39 point and 10 rebound effort. Major followed Waples in scoring with 23 points, while Ellison added six points and three boards.

With the 39 points scored, Waples has recorded four of the top five totals in a single-game in program history. The senior guard raised his single season scoring record to an 643 points and improved his career lead in points to 1,440. Waples has an average of 26.8 points per game, which is the third highest in the nation and leads the NEAC by more than 4.6 points over the second leading scorer. In addition to being the all-time scoring leader, Waples ends his storied career as record holder in scoring average (20.0), free throws made (333), and free throw percentage (78.5%). Waples finds himself ranked among the top-10 all-time in field goals made (485), 3-pointers made (137), assists (206), steals (93), and minutes per game (30.3). He ends his senior year as the single-season leader in points, points per game, field goals made (199), 3-pointers made (77), free throws made (168), and minutes per game (36.0).

Major joins Waples as one of the most formidable scorer's in program-history as he finishes his time at Berks with the fourth most career points with 1178. He also ranks among the top-10 in scoring average (16.4), field goals made (418), 3-pointers made (138), free throws made (204), and field goal percentage (72.1). Major finishes his senior season with 430 points, which is the sixth most in a season and his 20.5 points per game average ranks as the third highest all-time.

Ellison completes his four-year career with 483 points for a scoring average of 4.9 points per game to go along with 83 assists and 56 steals. He racked up a total of 483 rebounds, which is the third most all-time in Berks history.

Junior Joel Ellison finished today's contest with nine points, five assists, and four rebounds, while Matt Thompson added four points and six boards.

The Wildcats, who finish the season as the No. 1 seed from the North Division, were led by Quayshaun Mitchell with 34 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Terrynce Wilson chipped in 20 points, while Joseph Ojo and Kevin Williams with 13 points.
