Men's basketball again edged at the buzzer

READING, PA - For the third straight game, the Penn State Berks men's basketball team had its hopes dashed in the final seconds. The most recent coming off of a tip-in as time expired to propel Penn College of Technology to a 101-99 victory in double overtime over the Nittany Lions in Wednesday evening's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

Berks trailed by 10 points early in the opening period, but were able to cut the damage down to just a four point deficit at the break. The second half featured five lead changes and eight tied scores as the teams entered the first overtime knotted up at 80-all. Both teams held two point leads in the first overtime session, but neither was able to break the deadlock over the final 1:48 of the period. In the second overtime period, the Wildcats (8-12, 6-9 NEAC) built an early lead and took a five point advantage into the final minute of play. The Nittany Lions (4-13, 4-9 NEAC) got back to a one-possession game after Baba Waples sunk a pair of free throws. Eli Adams tied up the Penn College guard to force a jump ball that was in Berks' favor. Nelson Hine then drained a 3-pointer from the corner to even the game at 99-99 with 39 seconds left. Berks forced a turnover, but was unable to get the go-ahead basket and Penn College grabbed the defensive board. With the shot clock turned off and coming out of a timeout with 3.9 seconds on the clock, the Wildcats drove to the hoop and an off balance runner by Erik Eichinger bounced off the rim, but was tapped into the net as time expired by Jesse White.

Waples, who played in 49 minutes of action, finished with a contest-high 40 points with the help of 14-for-18 showing from the free throw line. The 40 point effort was the third most in a game in program-history, which now gives Waples three of the top four records in a school history.
