Men's basketball earns overtime win over Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team picked up a thrilling overtime victory over Penn State Abington, 92-88, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Tuesday night at the Beaver Community Center.

Berks (1-8, 1-2 NEAC) and Abington (2-3, 1-1 NEAC) engaged in a back-and-forth battle over the beginning portion of the first period, with 20 lead changes and neither team leading by more than three points. Berks took the lead 27-26 at the 7:47 mark of the first half and held that lead until halftime. The largest lead in the first half was five points for Berks at 5:06. They eventually took a 38-35 advantage into the break.

In the second half, Berks increased its lead to 12 pints (51-39) with 14:51 left in regulation, but Abington was able to chip away at its deficit and trailed by just two points (61-59) with 10:02 to go. Berks built the lead back up to 69-63 with 7:01 to go, but a 9-2 run capped by a 3-pointer by Quinn DeNofa at 3:51 gave Abington its first lead (72-71) since 8:54 in the first half. After a the lead changed hands a couple of times, Matt Seip made a jumper and on the next possession hit a pair of free throws for a 79-76 lead with 1:19 on the clock. Both teams had empty possessions before Terrance Reese drilled the a game-tying 3-pointer with 27 seconds to play. After Berks missed the front-end of a one-and-one with 12 seconds remaining, Abington came down the court looking for the game-winner. John Ryan tried to take on David DiMeo one-on-one, but DiMeo stuffed the layup attempt to send the game to overtime.

Both teams came out sloppy in the overtime frame before Abington took the lead at 81-79 off a layup from DeNofa. Both teams again suffered another ugly stretch until Dave Polisano knocked down a pair of free throws to even the game at 2:30 left in OT. DiMeo recorded another blocked shot and Polisano came down the court for a layup to put Berks ahead by two. After another defensive stop, Seip drilled 3-pointer for an 86-81 lead with 1:20 left. Nelson Hine, Eric Stepnowski, and Brian Contaldi combined to 6-for-10 at the line down the stretch to solidify the win for Berks.

Seip led all scorers with his season-high 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor to go along with five rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots. Polisano knocked down four shots from long range to finish with 20 points in a career-high 41 minutes of action. DiMeo his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 boards, while also adding four assists and two blocked shots in 43 of 45 possible minutes played. Stepnowski had a huge game, as the big man finished with a career-high 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and grabbed seven boards. Robbie McHugh chipped in 10 points and eight boards to provide a boost of the bench for Berks. Hine, despite being held to just three points, contributed strongly with nine assists and eight boards.

Ryan led Abington with 20 points, followed by Devin Hill with 18. Reese added 10 points and led Abington in rebounds (9) and blocked shots (5).

Berks will play its final game of the fall semester with a non-conference home game against DeSales University on Thursday, December 7 at 7 p.m
