Slow start dooms Nittany Lions in NEAC opener

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Berks women's basketball team struggled in the opening quarter and were unable to battle all the way back in a 78-63 setback to Gallaudet University in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Wednesday night.

The Bison (3-2, 1-0 NEAC) dominated the first period to the tune of a 27-3 advantage. But the Nittany Lions finally got shots to drop in the second quarter and eventually outscored GU by a 30-14 margin to trail by eight points (41-33) at the break. The Bison outscored Berks by a 37-32 margin in the second half to close out the game.

For the second game in a row, Melissa Martin established a new personal-best for points scored. She connected on 5-of-8 shots from 3-point range and finished with a contest-high 21 points. In addition, Martin recorded eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

Kylie Herman also enjoyed a strong all-around performance with 19 points, nine boards, four steals, and three assists. Deanna Daddona chipped in nine points, to raise her career total in points to 990. Abbie Carr pulled down a team-high and personal-best 10 rebounds. Sam Brensinger notched five points, dished out a team-high five assists and tied Herman for the team lead with four steals.

Jakkisha Smith led the Bison in scoring with 19 points, followed by Hannah Neild with 18. Sabina Shysh tallied a double-double after recording 16 points and 10 boards. Kelsey Hudson hauled in a contest-best 14 rebounds to go along with seven points, four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC tilt on Saturday, December 2 at 4 p.m.
