Gallaudet pulls away late to top Berks in conference opener

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team overcame an early first half deficit and battled evenly late into the game, but Gallaudet University was able to pull away late to grab an 86-78 victory in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions found themselves down by 11 points (18-7) just four minutes into the game and still trailed by double-digits (23-13) with 11:57 left in the opening period. From there, Berks used a 16-2 run to grab a four point lead at the 6:03 mark of the first half. The teams exchanged leads down the stretch before a 3-pointer by David DiMeo at the buzzer gave the Nittany Lions a 44-42 edge going into the break.

In the second half, Berks went ahead by seven points in the early going, before the Bison rallied back and then some for 10 point cushion (65-55) with 11:34 left in regulation. Dave Polisano recorded eight straight points and Nelson Hine capped off the 10-0 run with a layup to pull even at 65-all with 7:52 to play. Matt Seip then extended the run to 12-0 and give the Nittany Lions the lead.

The game went back-and-forth over the next few minutes and had their 10th tie score of the evening at 71-71. Seip knocked down a free throw at 3:08 to give Berks a one point lead, but the Bison countered with a 3-pointer at 2:56 and would not relinquish that lead down the stretch.

DiMeo had his finest performance of the season after pouring in a contest-high 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor and 5-of-8 from long distance. The sophomore guard also pulled down eight rebounds and two steals in 35 minutes of action.

Polisano knocked down five 3's on his way to 17 points, while also adding four assists. Seip rounded out the Nittany Lions scoring in double-digits with his 12 point performance. Hine, who chipped in seven points, had a team-best 11 boards and eight assists.

The Bison had six players reach double figures in scoring, led by Noah Valencia with 19. Andy Cruz added 19 points and nine rebounds, while Preston Kelly tallied 14 points.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC contest on Saturday, December 2 at 2 p.m.
