Hot shooting down the stretch propels women's basketball to win

MEDIA, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team pulled away late with an 11-for-12 performance at the foul line down the stretch to earn a 77-66 victory over Penn State Brandywine in non-conference action on Monday night.

Berks, who improves to 2-2 on the year, took a 31-24 lead heading into the halftime break. Brandywine (2-3) outscored Berks by two points in the third quarter to make it 47-42 score entering the final period. In the fourth quarter, Brandywine whittled the lead down to three points with 4:57 remaining in regulation. Three pointers made by Deanna Daddona and Sam Brensinger, along with a made layup by Melissa Martin over the next few minutes helped Berks cushion its lead with 1:43 to go. Berks relied on its free throw shooting from that point on, which was important because Brandywine knocked down three 3's and added a jumper over the final 45 seconds of play.

Berks went 21-for-24 at the free throw line for an 87.5%, which ranks as the sixth best performance in a single-game in program history. In the second half alone, the team converted on 16-of-18 trips to the charity stripe.

Martin finished with a contest-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor and 5-for-6 at the foul line. She also pulled down a personal-high nine rebounds to go along with three steals and two assists in 37 effective minutes of play.

Kylie Herman notched her first double-double of the season after recording 13 points and a contest-high 17 boards. The sophomore guard raised her level of play in the second half, where she tallied 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Herman was also one of the key contributors at the foul line down the stretch as she converted on 5-of-6 trips in the final minute of action. For the game, Herman also handed out three assists and had two blocked shots.

Daddona finished the game with 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals. She now sits at 981 points in her career, which is the fifth most in program history. Daddona did the bulk of her scoring at the foul line with a 7-for-8 performance. Brensinger poured in a season-high 15 points to go along with five boards and three assists in 39 minutes of action. Mechiah Brant chipped in six points, five boards, and three steals, while Elise Paskowski and Abbie Carr combined to record seven boards and four blocked shots.

Nikki Velez paced the Brandywine offense with 18 points, while also recording three steals. Brandi James added 16 points and 13 boards, followed by Kendra Stanford with 10 points and three blocked shots.

The Nittany Lions will open up NEAC play with a road game at Gallaudet University on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m.
