Nittany Lions rally comes up short against DelVal

DOYLESTOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team tallied 11 points over the final 1:10 of regulation, but the furious rally came up just short in a 78-73 setback to Delaware Valley University in Tuesday night's non-conference contest at James Work Gymnasium.

The Nittany Lions trailed by 17 points with 3:11 left in the second half, but a total team effort on both ends of the floor down the stretch pulled Berks back into contention until the clock struck 00:00.

Dave Polisano got the comeback bid started with a 3-pointer at the 3:02 mark and Robbie McHugh knocked down a pair of free throws at 2:05 to cut the Aggies lead to 12 (74-62). After DVU got one point back from a free throw, Polisano went to the line after getting fouled attempting a 3-pointer. He knocked down the first two, but missed the third one, which McHugh rebounded and quickly put back for a layup to make it 75-66 with 59 seconds left. Micah Krauter picked off a pass and raced down the court before kicking out a pass in front of the Berks bench to Polisano, who drilled a 3-pointer to make it a 6-point deficit with 31 ticks left on the clock. The Aggies hit the back end of a one-and-one, but McHugh added a layup off a nice feed from Nelson Hine with 13 seconds left to make it a 76-71 contest. DVU's Austin Stoeckel hit both shots at the free throw line, while Matt Seip later got an offensive board and a put back on the Berks end, but it was too little too late as time expired on after the basket.

In the opening half, Berks took its largest lead of the game off of an old-fashioned three-point play by Brian Contaldi. The freshman guard made a lay-up and converted his free throw to give the Nittany Lions a 28-25 advantage at 5:40 mark of the first period. From that point on, the Aggies closed out the half on a 14-3 run to take an eight point lead into the break.

Polisano finished with a contest-high 24 points after connecting on 4-of-7 shots from beyond the arc and going 6-for-7 at the free throw line. Seip recorded 14 points and five rebounds, while McHugh added 13 points and six boards. David DiMeo chipped in eight points, to go along with three assists and three blocked shots, while Krauter notched game-highs and personal bests with five assists and five steals. Hine finished the contest with a team-high seven boards to go with three assists and two steals.

Damian Washington led the Aggies with 23 points and seven boards, while Alex Matsinye had 15 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. JaDon Robinson rounded out the DVU players scoring in double figures with 10 points.

As was the case this past weekend, the Nittany Lions were hurt by poor shooting at the free throw line. The team shot just 65.2% (15-for-23), compared to a 70.0% (21-for-30) showing by the Aggies. Berks lost the battle of the boards by a 39-34 margin, but committed less turnovers with 15 versus 17 by DVU.

The Nittany Lions will host Stevenson University in a non-conference contest on Saturday, November 25 at 1 p.m. Admission for the contest will be free of charge with a the a monetary or canned good donation.
