Women's basketball tops NJCU, 70-53, at Susquehanna Tournament

SELINSGROVE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season after topping New Jersey City University, 70-53, in the consolation round of the Susquehanna Trailways Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (1-1), who never trailed in the contest, jumped out to a 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and eventually led by a 26-18 margin at the halftime break. The Berks offense went off for 44 points in the second half, while the defense held the Gothic Knights (0-3) to 35 points over hte final two periods.

Berks had three players score in double-figures, led by Deanna Daddona with 24 points. That raised her career total in points to 957, as she tries to become the fifth player in school history to join the 1,000 point club. Daddona also recorded six rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one blocked shot.

Melissa Martin added 16 points off the bench after shooting 4-of-7 from the floor, including a 2-for-3 showing from 3-point range. Kylie Herman chipped in 14 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds and five steals. Sam Brensinger dished out a team-high five assists, while also adding four points, two steals, and two boards. Elise Paskowski and Mechiah Brant notched six points, with Paskowski also bringing down six rebounds.

Jesenia Montalvo led the Gothic Knights with 22 points, followed by D'Amonte Cancel with 11 points. Nazje Imes finished with a contest-high 11 rebounds.

Herman was selected to the All-Tournament Team after turning in a strong performance over the last two days. The sophomore guard averaged 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference tilt at Drew University on Tuesday, November 21 at 6 p.m.
