Women's basketball drops season opener to Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team opened up the 2017-18 season with a 68-53 setback to Susquehanna University in the opening round of the Susquehanna Trailways Tip-off Tournament on Saturday night.

The Nittany Lions trailed 31-18 at halftime and were down by 19 points at the end of the third quarter. Finally, in the fourth quarter, shots began dropping and the offense was able to piece together better scoring chances as they outscored the host River Hawks 24-20 in the final period.

Kylie Herman had a strong debut for the Nittany Lions with a contest-high 18 points and eight rebounds, which tied Sam Brensinger for the team lead. Herman compiled four assists, one blocked shot, and one steal. Deanna Daddona knocked down three 3-pointers and chipped in 15 points, while also adding five boards and three steals. Melissa Martin came off the bench to contribute eight points, four rebounds, and three assists. Abbie Carr notched four rebounds and four blocked shots, which is tied for the 10th most in a single-game in program history.

The River Hawks had three players score in double figures, led by Rachel Sweger with 15 points. Maddie Murray added 11, while Megan McFadden chipped in 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will face New Jersey City University in the consolation round of the tournament on Sunday, November 19 at 1 p.m.
