Second half run by Scranton downs Nittany Lions

SCRANTON, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered a 78-63 setback to the University of Scranton in the first round of the Scranton Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night.

The Nittany Lions (0-2) built a 13 point lead in the opening half, but the Royals (1-0) were able to trim that margin down to one point as Berks took a 34-33 lead into the intermission. Out of the halftime break, the teams exchanged leads and were eventually knotted up at 40-all with 16:11 left in regulation. Scranton held a two-possession lead as late at 8:37 remaining, before pulling away and extending its lead to 59-50 with 7:41 to play.

Berks jumped out to its early first half lead behind four straight baskets from 3-point range. David Dimeo connected on the first of the bunch, followed by back-to-back 3s from Nelson Hine. Dave Polisano capped off the scoring spree at 4:06 to give the Nittany Lions a 34-21 advantage.

Polisano and Matt Seip tied for the team lead for Berks with 13 points each. Micah Krauter added 11 points and Dimeo followed with 10. Hine, who chipped in eight points, had a contest-high 11 rebounds to go along with two assists and two blocked shots.

The Nittany Lions were hampered by poor shooting from the free throw line and a number of costly turnovers. As a team, Berks shot 7-for-19 from the foul line for a 36.8% showing. They committed 24 turnovers, which directly led to 29 points for the Royals.

Berks returns to action with the consolation game of the Scranton Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, November 18 against the University of Pitt.-Bradford.
