Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer edges SUNY Cobleskill, 1-0

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The tandem of Brenden Valverde and Jon Mercier combined on another score, while Gerardo Sosa and Trent Johnson along with the rest of the defense pitched a shut out as the Penn State Berks men's soccer team topped SUNY Cobleskill, 1-0, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 6-5-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in the NEAC, while the Fighting Tigers drop to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

After a scoreless first half, Berks broke through with the lone goal of the game at the 62:03 mark. Mercier sent a cross in front of the net that Valverde headed past the keeper for his conference leading 16th goal of the season. The assist was Mercier's 12th of the year, which leads the NEAC. In a win over Morrisville State College yesterday, Valverde tallied three goals and Mercier assisted on each of them. Mercier has provided the assist on seven of Valverde's goals this season, including each of his last five scores

On the defensive end, Sosa finished with four saves in net during the first 45 minutes of action. Johnson, who took over out of the halftime intermission, made a season-high seven stops in the second period. The duo received strong play from the defensive unit in front of them by Tom Ulrich, Jakob Fischer, Brennan Scheetz, and Orion Mathias.

For the game, the Tigers outshot Berks by a 13-12 margin (11-7 on goal) and had held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference contest against Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m.
