Men's soccer nipped by E-Town in final minutes

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to Elizabethtown College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions drop to 6-6-1 overall, while the Blue Jays improve to 7-5-1.

E-Town got on the board with a score at 22:07 when Tyler Colasanto headed the ball under the cross bar into the center of the net. But Berks answered back just over 10 minutes later when Wes Fox sent a beautiful pass down the sideline to Brenden Valverde, who then worked past the last defender. The freshman forward then beat the keeper one-on-one with a drive to the far corner in the 33rd minute to net his team leading 17th goal of the season.

The score remained that way heading into halftime and through the majority of the second period until Scott Hess poked in the game winner at the 86:43 mark of the contest.

Berks had plenty of opportunities, particularly in the opening 15 minutes, but could not break through for a score. Valverde had a shot go wide of goal in the 3rd minute, followed by a shot off the left post by Nathaniel Shenk in the 6th minute and Cole Mays had a shot saved by the keeper and then his rebound slammed off the crossbar in the 12th minute.

Mays had a similar situation in the start of the second half, when his first shot that was sure to be a goal was blocked by a defender and his effort on rebound was stopped by the keeper. Manny Zavala used some fancy footwork to created a scoring chance in the 52nd minute, but Brian Gately again made the save. Jon Mercier had a shot sail high and Valverde had one go wide late in the second half that kept score even at the time.

Trent Johnson, making his first start of the season finished with two saves in the first half, while Gerardo Sosa also finished with two stops during the second half. The defensive play out of Tom Ulrich, Jakob Fischer, Brennan Scheetz, and Orion Mathias did a solid job limiting the Blue Jays scoring chances. For the match, the Nittany Lions outshot E-Town by a 14-8 margin, while both teams put six shots on goal. Gately finished the contest with five saves in net for the Blue Jays.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a critical North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Penn State Abington on Monday, October 16 at 4 p.m.
