Women's volleyball tops St. Elizabeth in NEAC Quarterfinals

READING, PA - For the second time in four days, the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team edged the College of Saint Elizabeth by a 3-0 margin. The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Quarterfinal round victory on Tuesday night sent the Nittany Lions in the semifinal round and the right to host the Final Four this weekend.

The Nittany Lions picked up the win by game scores of 25-7, 25-11, and 25-18 to improve to 14-13 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 10-17 overall.

In the opening set, Berks broke open a 4-3 score by going on an 8-1 run to build a 12-4 lead. After back-to-back points by CSE, the Nittany Lions used a 9-0 run to close out the match and earn the 25-7 win. In that 9-0 run, Madison Wojciechowski had one ace on her eight serves to close out the set. Alexis Horst started the run with three consecutive kills and the Eagles had three straight attack errors to end the game.

Berks pulled away in the second set with a 10-2 run that build an 18-7 lead. In the third set, Berks went on an 11-1 run that gave them an 18-7 lead on its way to closing out the match. But the Eagles battled back and pulled to within six at 21-15, however Berks was able alternate points down the stretch to earn the win.

For the match, Horst led the offense with eight kills and Megan Lackman followed with seven. Morgan Schwartz handed out 22 assists, to go along with four digs. Wojciechowski led the team with 11 digs, while Lackman and Horst both collected seven. As a team, the Nittany Lions compiled 11 aces as Lackman led the way with four, while Wojciechowski added three and Laken Bankert had two. Abbie Carr and Kayla Nespoli each had an ace.

Stephanie Mitarotonda led the Eagles with seven kills. Libero Jessica Garreffa had 11 digs and setter Maura Farley dished out 12 assists to go along with six digs.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University on Saturday, November 4 at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal round match of the day. Wells College and Morrisville State will follow at 12 p.m. in the other semifinal round contest. The winners will advance to Sunday, October 5 for the NEAC Championship game at 11:30 a.m.
