Men's soccer holds off Keuka rally

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team held off a late rally by Keuka College to a earn a 3-2 win in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 7-8-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the NEAC, while Keuka falls to 5-7-2 on the year and 4-4-1 in the conference. The victory was the first in men's soccer program history over the Wolves, which gives Berks a 1-14-1 all-time record in the series that dates back to 2005.

Cole Mays had the lone score in the opening half with his sixth goal of the season. Brenden Valverde crossed the ball in the box and Mays ripped a one-timer past the keeper at the 27:49 mark.

Berks extended its lead to 2-0 when Manny Zavala collected a loose ball and unleashed a perfectly placed curling shot that beat the keeper inside the right post in the 65th minute.

The Wolves cut its deficit in half when Samba Doukhansy put home a shot off of a cross by Chris Millard in the 72nd minute.

Just over five minutes later, Valverde was knocked down while inside the box which was whistled for a penalty kick. Valverde laced a line drive into the back left corner to collect his conference leading 19th goal of the season to give Berks a 3-1 lead.

Keuka bounced back with a goal from Chris Millard off of a cross by Jordan Miller to pull within one (3-2) with 10:58 remaining in regulation.

Clinging to the one goal lead, the Berks defense stepped up and did not allow a shot the rest of the way to solidify the win for the Nittany Lions.

Gerardo Sosa made three saves in the first half and made several heads up plays to cut off crosses. In the second half, Trent Johnson made four saves in the second half, three of which were diving stops. Johnson, like Sosa, cut off several cross attempts to thwart the Wolves attack. The defensive unit of Tom Ulrich, Jakob Fischer, Brennan Scheetz, and Orion Mathias turned in a strong effort. The midfield play from Cole Fagley, Wes Fox, Jon Mercier, and Zavala helped control possession for Berks throughout the contest.

Keuka outshot Berks by a 15-13 advantage in shots (9-6 on goal) and also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Bryn Athyn College in a NEAC contest on Thursday, October 26 at 5 p.m.
