Mays tallies game winner in final seconds to top Bryn Athyn, 2-1

READING, PA - Cole Mays found the back of the net with just 14 seconds left on the clock to lead the Penn State Berks men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bryn Athyn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Thursday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 8-8-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference, while Bryn Athyn dropped to 5-10 on the season and 2-8 in the conference. With the victory, Berks clinched a spot in the NEAC Postseason for the third straight season. The quarterfinal contest will be played on Tuesday, October 31.

The winning play begin with a free kick by Bryn Athyn deep in their end that was collected by Berks around midfield. Manny Zavala played a through ball ahead to Mays, who took a couple of dribbles and beat the keeper with a shot into the back corner at the 89:46 mark of the contest.

The Mays-Zavala combination worked together for the Nittany Lions first goal in the 28th minute of the opening period. Zavala dribbled down to the end line and crossed a ball from the left side to the middle of the box. Mays jumped up and deflected the ball out of the air and into the far corner to put Berks ahead 1-0 at the time.

The Lions were able to gain the equalizer in the 42nd minute to send the match into the break tied at 1-all.

Early in the second half, Bryn Athyn was awarded a penalty kick after a handball by Berks inside the box. The Bryn Athyn player sent a low liner to the left side of the net and Trent Johnson guess right and was able to make the save to keep the score tied. A Bryn Athyn player collected the rebound, but had his shot sail high over the goal. This was the second penalty kick over the last two games that Johnson has saved.

Johnson finished the second half with three saves to earn his second win of the season. Gerardo Sosa made two stops in the opening half. Quentin Hager made eight saves, while AJ Clark finished with three for Bryn Athyn.

For the match, Berks outshot Bryn Athyn by a 21-13 margin (13-7 on goal) and held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a home match against Wilson College on Saturday, October 28 at 2 p.m. The team will host its Pink Game fundraiser, as well as honor seniors Wes Fox and Jon Mercier before the start of the game.
