Women's soccer blanks SUNY Poly, 5-0

READING, PA - Caitlin Golden recorded her second straight hat trick to help lead the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over visiting SUNY Polytechnic in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 8-5-1 overall and 7-0 in the NEAC, while SUNY Poly drops to 9-3-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in the conference.

Golden got her first tally of the afternoon after Monica Pinel delivered a perfect pass over top of the Wildcat defense. Golden took a few quick touches and sent her shot inside the left post at the 12:40 mark of the first period. The junior forward netted her second goal in the 38th minute when Ryann Barreto played the ball ahead of the defense. Golden collected the ball on the right side of the box and beat the keeper with a shot into the left corner.

Coming out of the break, Julia Green extended the Nittany Lions lead to 3-0 with a well placed chip over the keeper's head in the 53rd minute for her second goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Golden found the back of the net for the third time with a line drive through the right side of the net. Charlotte Pizzuto supplied the assist on the score. Megan Jardine capped off the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 67 minute for her eighth goal of the season.

The defensive play of Shelby Baker, Mackenzie Fredricks, Karina Raykova, and Jess Mandeville held the Wildcats offense in check. The three shots that SUNY Poly was able to put on net were all stopped by Paige Elmy.

The Nittany Lions will host Keuka College in a NEAC tilt on Sunday, October 22 at 2 p.m.
