Men's soccer edged by SUNY Poly, 2-1

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to SUNY Polytechnic in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions drop to 6-8-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats improve to 7-7 on the season and 5-2 in the conference.

SUNY Poly opened up the scoring with a a goal by Benjamin Alonge at the 9:45 mark of the opening period. Berks evened things up later in the first period when Brenden Valverde found the back of the net off of a nice pass through traffic by Cole Mays in the 30th minute. The goal was Valverde's 18 of the season, which leads the NEAC and ranks as the most in a single-season in program history.

The Wildcats put up another score when Gerry Thermil scored off of a corner kick by Zack Joseph at the 48:38 mark of the contest. SUNY Poly looked to added to their lead with a penalty kick at 89:15, but Trent Johnson made a spectacular diving stop to his right to make the save.

Gerardo Sosa made two saves in the first half, while Johnson matched his career-high with seven stops in the second half. Alexander Gigliotti made five saves during all 90 minutes of action for the Wildcats.

Berks outshot the Wildcats by a 19-15 margin, although SUNY Poly held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Neither team had a corner kick in the opening 45 minutes, but Berks had seven and SUNY Poly had five in the second period.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a home match against Keuka College on Sunday, October 22 at 12 p.m.
