Men’s soccer falls in final minutes to Abington

ABINGTON, PA – The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 setback with the lone goal coming at the 88:19 mark by Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Monday afternoon.

Berks drops to 6-7-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in the NEAC, while Abington improves to 8-6 overall and 6-0 in conference.

Abington finally broke the scoreless tie when Sebastian Kryztofowicz headed the ball inside the left post off a cross from Chris Schlegel. Berks was unable to get a shot off over the final 1:41 of play to give Abington the victory on their home turf.

Abington managed a 19-4 advantage on total shots and held a 9-2 margin on shots on goal.

In the first half, Gerardo Sosa stopped each shot that came his way to finish the period with four saves. Trent Johnson matched Sosa with four saves in the second half; the only one to get by was Abington's final shot of the afternoon. Ty Morris, who played all 90 minutes in goal for Abington, finished with a pair of saves in the second half to earn the win.

After tallying just one shot in the opening period, which sailed high of the target, Berks was able to piece together some scoring chances in the second half. Brenden Valverde and Jon Mercier both put a shot on frame, but Morris was there for the save. Berks also managed three corner kicks for the game, two of which came in the second half.

The Nittany Lions will enjoy four home contests against conference opponents to finish out the regular season. They begin the homestand with a pair matches this weekend, beginning with SUNY Poly (1 p.m.) on Saturday, October 21, followed by Keuka College (2 p.m.) on Sunday, October 22.
