Women's soccer edged by Albright, 1-0

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Albright College in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium

The Nittany Lions drop to 6-5-1 on the season, while Albright improves to 8-5-1 overall.

In the opening half, Caitlin Golden and Megan Jardine both put shots on target, but Payton Bogatch made the save on each. Paige Elmy recorded her save in the 31st minute off a shot by Bree Bowles. For the half, Berks outshot the Lions by a 4-3 margin (2-1 on goal), but both goalkeepers were able to make the stop to make it a scoreless tie at the halftime intermission.

Coming out of the break, Golden had a pair of shots blocked by the defense to keep the game tied. Each team managed a corner kick midway through the second period, but nothing came from them. Albright took its first two shots of the period in the 67th and 68th minute, but the Nittany Lions defenders blocked both attempts. Jardine had a another shot denied by Bogatch in the 73rd minute and Golden had her break away effort stuffed by Bogatch in the 74th minute. Elmy made a nice diving save in the 80th minute to keep Albright off the scoreboard.

After an offside infraction called against Berks, the Lions worked the ball deep into their offensive territory. The Nittany Lions tried to clear the ball out of their end, but Morgan Valera collected the loose ball and chipped a cross in front of the Berks goal. Crissy Terraces came crashing in and ripped the ball out of midair with a line drive through the right side of the goal to give Albright the winning tally at the 83:12 mark of the contest. Berks was unable to generate a scoring opportunity following the goal and Albright was able to play keep away down the stretch to secure the victory.

For the game, both teams recorded nine shots, with Berks putting five on target and Albright collecting three on goal. The Nittany Lions had three corner kicks in the second half and held a 4-2 advantage for the match. Elmy finished the contest with a two saves, while her counterpart Bogatch made five stops.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn State Abington for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Tuesday, October 17 at 4 p.m.
