Women's volleyball picks up a 3-0 sweep over Albright

READING, PA - Despite an eight day layoff, the Penn State Berks women's volleyball was banging on all cylinders as they earned their second straight 3-0 victory, this one coming on the road against nearby foe Albright College on Thursday evening at the Bollman Center.

The Nittany Lions, who defeated Gallaudet University on October 4 in their last outing of the season, improved to 8-9 overall while Albright drops to 3-17 on the year. Berks won by set scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-5 to claim the victory.

Berks jumped out to a 7-3 lead in game one, which was as large of lead as they would hold throughout the opener. Albright kept within striking distance of the Nittany Lions and eventually evened the score at 18-all. Berks matched its largest lead of the first game at 24-20 and held off a late comeback bid to earn at 25-22 victory. Megan Lackman closed the scoring for Berks in the first set by recording four kills. As a team, the Nittany Lions had 12 kills against four errors and finished with a .174 hitting percentage for the game.

In the second game, Berks broke an 8-all tie by going on a 9-2 run to gain some breathing room. Albright found its way back in the game behind one kill and three Berks errors to pull cut the lead to 18-14, but the Nittany Lions responded with a 5-0 run to pull away late. Madison Wojciechowski recorded two aces during that late stretch and Alexis Horst put the match away with a kill for the 25-16 victory.

The third game was a dominating performance from start to finish by the Nittany Lions. Lackman and Wojciechowski combined on five service aces, while Amia Boone and Abbie Carr combined on five kills each for Berks during an 18-1 run to start the third game. Lackman tallied three kills and Kayla Nespoli had another as the Nittany Lions closed the set with four straight points to win 20-5. Berks recorded 10 kills and committed only one error on 22 attempts to finish with an efficient .409 attack percentage.

Lackman led the offensive attack with 11 kills, while Boone and Carr followed with six apiece. Three players combined on the teams 12 service aces, led by Wojciechowski with six, Lackman with four and Laken Bankert with two. Wojciechowski and Horst tied for the team lead with 13 digs each, Lackman followed with 11. At the net, Carr racked up a season-high five block assists and added one solo, while Maddy Kessler matched her season-best with four. Morgan Schwartz dished out 31 assists and grabbed six digs.

For the whole match, the Nittany Lions compiled 32 kills with 12 errors on 99 attempts for a team hitting percentage of .202. Lackman led the way with her 11 kills coming on 19 attacks without committing any errors for a personal-best .579 hitting percentage.

The Nittany Lions will look to keep the momentum going as they travel Lancaster Bible College for a pair of NEAC contests against North Division opponents on Saturday, October 14. Berks will face Wells College at 12 p.m. and Keuka College at 2 p.m.
