Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball suffers heart breaker to Wells College

AURORA, N.Y. - Wells College had a 3-pointer bank in as time expired to hand the Penn State Berks men's basketball team a 99-98 setback in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

After a miss at the foul line by Berks with seven seconds left, the Express (11-6, 8-2) grabbed the defensive rebound raced the ball down to their end of the court and Ayodele Akinmola got off an off-balanced three from the right wing as the buzzer sounded. Unfortunately, for the Nittany Lions (4-11, 4-7), the ball kissed off the glass and into the net to hand Berks its third one-possession loss this month.

The Express jumped ahead by 12 points (16-4) just minutes into the game, but Berks battled back and eventually knotted the score at 25-all with 9:18 left in the opening period. From that point on the teams exchanged leads back-and-forth, with the Nittany Lions taking a 44-43 advantage into the halftime intermission. Out of the break, the Nittany Lions went ahead by eight points (61-53) with 15:21 remaining and score remained in Berks' favor until the Express went ahead 85-83 with 3:45 left to play. The final stretch saw four tied scores and four lead changes that ended with the buzz beater.

Baba Waples, who broke the single-game scoring record a few games ago, finished with the third most points in a game in program history after recording 39 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor. The senior guard was a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line and went 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Waples pulled down a career-high and team-best nine rebounds and also handed out two assists.

Darren Major also did a bulk of the scoring for the Nittany Lions with 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. He knocked down four 3-pointers and also had a perfect showing at the foul line with a 6-for-6 showing. The senior guard now sits at 989 points for his career.

Matt Thompson finished with eight points, while Justin Seemann had career-highs six points and eight boards. Dave Polisano added five points and four boards, while Nelson Hine dished out a contest-high nine assists.

Rich Ross and Akinmola tid for the team lead with 17 points, followed by Anthony Nesci and James Feocco with 16 each. Chris Courtney rounded out the Express players scoring in double figures with 13 points.

The Nittany Lions will look to rebound with a NEAC game at Keuka College on Sunday, January 29 at 3 p.m.
