Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball outlasts Bryn Athyn, 83-81

BRYN ATHYN, PA - After a pair of heartbreaking defeats earlier in the week, the Penn State Berks men's basketball team picked up a thrilling 83-81 victory on the road over Bryn Athyn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The teams alternated leads throughout the first half and went into the intermission deadlocked at 37-all. Bryn Athyn jumped out to a two point lead to start the second half, but the Nittany Lions (3-9, 3-5 NEAC) grabbed the lead back and held on to it over the next five minutes. The lead exchanged hands a few more times with Berks going up by five points with 9:50 remaining, but the Lions (4-8, 2-5 NEAC) countered with a run to go ahead 70-63 with 5:04 left in regulation.

Baba Waples capped off a 13-3 run with a 3-pointer that gave Berks a one point lead with 1:32 to play. Joel Ellison brought down a defensive rebound and Matt Thompson added a layup to give the Nittany Lions a three point advantage with 49 seconds left. Nelson Hine then converted on 5-of-6 trips to the free throw line, beginning with a pair of free throws with 26 seconds left to put Berks ahead 80-75 but Devante Laws drilled a quick 3-pointer to pull within two points. Hine pocketed another two at the line to go up by four points and again the Lions answered with a quick 3-pointer, this time by Deion Boyer, to make it 82-81 with 11 seconds remaining. Berks in-bounded to Hine, who was quickly fouled and sent to the line, where he made 1-of-2 shots to give the Nittany Lions an 83-81 lead. The attempt by Boyer for the game winner was no good, but Stephan Tucker got an offensive board to keep their hope alive. Tucker dribbled back to 3-point range and put up an air ball as time expired.

Waples led all scorers in the contest with 19 points after connecting on all three of his attempts from beyond the arc and finishing the game 7-of-11 from the floor. The senior guard also recorded five rebounds, and three assists. Hine and Darren Major each recorded 18 points, three steals, and three assists, with Hine also adding seven boards. Thompson chipped in 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Ellison added seven points.

Waples leads the NEAC with a 23.8 points per game scoring average, while Major is second in the conference with a 20.8 average.

Boyer and Laws each connected on five 3-pointers and finished tied for the team lead with 17 points, followed by Troy Steed with 14. Rahim Washington added 11 points and Austin Nyekan had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a pair of home NEAC games next weekend against members from the North Division. They will host Morrisville State College on Saturday, January 21 at 3 p.m. and Cazenovia College on Sunday, January 22 at 2 p.m.
