Second half slump dooms men's basketball

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team saw its halftime lead slip away and were unable to recover down the stretch as Morrisville State College topped the Nittany Lions, 97-84, in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (3-10, 3-6 NEAC) took a six point lead into the halftime break after shooting 46.2% (18-of-39) from the floor and shot 32.4% (6-of-17) from long range. Unfortunately for Berks, the second half saw the shooting drop down to 32.4% (12-of-37) and just 22.2% (4-of-18) from 3-point range. On the flip side, the Mustangs (9-4, 6-1 NEAC) shot 43.3 (13-of-30) in the first half and improved to 60.7% (17-of-28) after the half. The difference of the game was the 33-for-41 (80.5%) performance at the line by Morrisville State, while Berks had a better percentage (82.4%) but were held to just 17 chances, where they converted 14.

All five of the starters for the Nittany Lions scored in double figures, led by Baba Waples, who knocked down four 3-pointers and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the line. The senior guard also pulled down five boards and handed out four assists. Matt Thompson registered a career-high 17 points after shooting 7-of-12 from the floor, followed by Darren Major with 14 points. Nelson Hine added 11 points to go along with six assists and three steals. Joel Ellison notched a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Kevin Dennis led the Mustangs with 24 points and 14 boards, while Kenny Bonaparte added 19 points and Trent Ward chipped in 18.

The Nittany Lions will look to rebound with a home NEAC contest against Cazenovia College on Sunday, January 22 at 2 p.m.
