Women's volleyball rallies for 3-1 win over Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball overcame a slow start to rally for a 3-1 win over Immaculata in a non-conference contest Thursday evening on the road at Alumnae Hall.

The Nittany Lions (2-2) were in a deep hole after Immaculata jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the opening. After a timeout, Berks went on 7-1 run to pull within two points and eventually managed to trail just 21-20. The Mighty Macs finished off the game for a 25-21 win, but the momentum had swung in the Nittany Lions favor. Berks evened the game at 1-all after pulling out a 25-23 win in the second game, followed by a 25-14 and 25-17 win in the next two games to seal the victory.

Collectively, the Nittany Lions recorded 46 kills on 153 attempts and finished with a .118 hitting percentage. After committing double digit errors in each of the first two games, the offense cleaned itself up with only two errors in game three and five in the decisive fourth game.

Alexis Horst led the Berks attack with 15 kills, while Samantha Gonzalez chipped in 10 and Lindsay Amrhein added nine as the trio combined for more than half of the teams kills. Cristine Humer recorded a season-high four service aces, followed by Laken Bankert with two.

The defense had four players reach double figures in digs as the team combined for season-best 76 digs. Libero Madison Wojciechowski led the way with 20, while Horst and Schwartz each had 16 and Humer tallied 12. At the net, the Nittany Lions finished the day with 14 total blocks. Makayla Fleming had a team-best four block assists, while Amrhein, Horst, and Amia Boone each had two. Amrhein also collected two solo blocks.

Gabrielle Guerrera led the Mighty Macs with 11 kills, followed by Arden Vizzard with 10. Olivia Zdradzinski recorded 30 assists and 13 digs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to northern Pennsylvania for a tri-match on Saturday, September 10. They will face Wilkes University at 12 p.m., followed by host Keystone College at 2 p.m.
