Yurkovic nets game winner 34 seconds into overtime

BRYN ATHYN, PA - All it took was 34 seconds into the overtime period for T.J. Yurkovic to register the game winning goal and send his team and the Penn State Berks fans into a frenzy as the Nittany Lions downed Bryn Athyn College, 3-2, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (1-2, 1-0 NEAC) overcame an goal by the home team to take a 2-1 advantage early in the second half, but Bryn Athyn was able to get the equalizer in the 80th minute. In the extra frame, Tom Ulrich cleared the ball out of Berks' defensive end to Jon Mercier, who had some space to work with down the field. He passed off to Trent Moyer, who passed back to Mercier, and then Mercier sent a perfect cross to Yurkovic. Yurkovic's initial shot was blocked, but he collected the loose ball scramble and sent home the game winner at the 90:34 mark of the contest.

Dating back to the beginning of last season, Yurkovic has recorded three game winning goals in overtime, all of which were scored in under a minute. He scored in 52 seconds against Albright College (Sept, 14, 2015), 23 seconds against Cazenovia College (Sept. 26, 2015), and now 34 against Bryn Athyn.

Yurkovic scored his first goal of the game in the 57th minute with an assist by Cole Mays to give Berks a 2-1 lead. The Nittany Lions first goal of the contest saw a perfect insert off a corner by Mercier and an excellent header by Isaiah Danner to even the game at 1-all in the 43rd minute. Bryn Athyn (0-2, 0-1 NEAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute with a score by Damilare Adeleye.

Gerardo Sosa recorded his first win in net after making two saves. The Nittany Lions had a 20-11 shots advantage and held a 7-6 margin in corner kicks.

Berks will travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, September 14 at 4 p.m.
