Nittany Lions fall in double OT to Misericordia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback in double overtime to Misericorida University in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

The teams battled evenly through regulation and the first overtime frame, but the Cougars (2-0) were able to set up the winning goal in the 103rd minute. The Nittany Lions were unable to clear the Cougars throw in and Kylen Smith delivered from the 18-yard box that deflect off the inside post and into the cage.

Sophomore Paige Elmy came up with eight saves in net, including several diving stops throughout the second half. The Nittany Lions again received strong play from the defensive unit of Brennan Moyer, Shelby Baker, Karina Raykova, Megan Jardine and in the midfield by Alexa Lopez and Charlotte Pizzuto.

Berks had some bad luck during its best scoring opportunities that clanked off the crossbar midway through the first half. In the 27th minute, Lizzie Mummau blasted a shot from 20-yards out that went over the keepers head and slammed off the crossbar. Keri Klimko then deflected the rebound back on target, but again the ball smacked off the crossbar.

The Cougars held a 15-4 advantage in shots and both teams managed four corners.

The Nittany Lions will hit the road to open up conference play with a game at Bryn Athyn College on Tuesday, September 6 at 2 p.m.
