Men's soccer drops heartbreaker to Immaculata

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking setback to Immaculata University, 2-1, in a non-conference tilt on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams played an even first half that saw a scoreless tie going into the break. In the opening half, the Nittany Lions saw a line drive by Jon Mercier smack of the left post and four other shots stopped by the Mighty Macs keeper. Immaculata had one scoring chance in the first 45 minutes, but Gerardo Sosa made the stop for the Nittany Lions.

Berks controlled possesion at the start of the second half with a shot by Cole Mays sailing just wide of target and liner by Bryan Franco that was knocked out of bounds by the keeper to give a corner for the Nittany Lions. Mercier insert was knocked out by Immaculata, but he was able to get the ball and put a perfect cross into the box that Tom Ulrich headed in at the 52 minute mark to put Berks ahead 1-0.

Immaculata recorded the equalizer with a score in the 57th minute and went ahead with a goal in the 75th minute.

Berks tried its hardest to knot the game up at 2-all, with five consecutive corner kicks starting in the 79th minute. Mercier again was giving perfect inserts, with a header by Franco being deflected out of bounds by the defense. Ulrich got his head on another one of the corners and nearly netted his second goal of the contest, but a defender positioned inside the box was able to block it from crossing the goal line.

The Nittany Lions outshot Immaculata by a count of 16-6, with Berks putting nine shots on target compared to just three by the Mighty Macs. Berks also held the advantage in corners with all seven coming in the second half, while Immaculata had two in each half.

The Nittany Lions will begin a stretch of four straight road matches, beginning with their NEAC opener at Bryn Athyn College on Tuesday, September 6 at 4 p.m.
