Nittany Lions shut out Alvernia on the road

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team scored early and often en route to a 5-0 shutout on the road over Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions (6-2-1) remain unbeaten in their last six contests and picked up their third consecutive shutout.

Caitlin Golden tallied two goals in the first 11 minutes. The first score came at the 1:51 mark when she took control of a loose ball and unleashed a line drive into the back of the net. The second goal came at the 10:11 mark of the first half when Brennan Moyer passed a through ball that Golden tracked down and beat the keeper with a low line drive.

In between the goals by Golden was an unassisted by Kaylie Smucker in the 8th minute. Dana Sarcinello, who also finished the contest with two scores, recorded her first goal when Moyer sent a corner kick into the box that Sarcinello knocked out of the air into the near corner in the 29th minute. Sarcinello finished off the scoring with her team leading 10th goal just 2:32 into the second half. Smucker played the ball up ahead to Sarcinello, who took two touches in traffic and blasted a shot over the keeper's head from 20 yards out.

The defensive unit of Moyer, Shelby Baker, Megan Jardine, Karina Raykova, and Alexa Lopez quieted the Crusader offensive attack all contest long. Paige Elmy made a save on the shot she saw, while Kaylee Frapaul also recorded a save to secure the shutout.

The Nittany Lions had 11 shots (seven on goal) versus six shots (two on goal) by Alvernia, while the Crusaders held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will look to continue its momentum when they host Lancaster Bible College in a battle of the top two teams in the NEAC standings on Friday, September 30 at 5 p.m.
