Men's soccer falls on the road to Alvernia, 2-1

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team saw its rally come up just short in a 2-1 setback on the road to Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

Both teams applied pressure right from the first whistle. The Nittany Lions intercepted a pass at midfield and worked the ball up to Dan Zhmurkin, who ripped a line drive on target that was stopped by the Alvernia keeper just 17 seconds into the match. The Crusaders then got off two shots that both forced corner kicks in the fourth minute of the opening half. Zhmurkin had another scoring opportunity in the 12th minute when he blasted a shot into the top corner, but the Crusader keeper made a leaping stop to deny the goal. Despite the early action, the two teams took a scoreless tie into the intermission.

The Crusaders controlled possession coming out of the break with six shots and three corners in the first eight minutes, but still had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. They finally broke through with a goal off of a rebound at the 63:27 mark of the game. The Crusaders tacked on another goal in the 76th minute to build a 2-0 cushion.

The Berks offense went to work with Zhmurkin putting another shot on target and Trent Moyer sending a line drive just over the crossbar around the 80 minute mark. Cole Mays put the Nittany Lions on the board when he took a pass from Tom Ulrich and sent a ground ball through the keepers legs and into the back of the net at 85:10. The goal was Mays fourth goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead with T.J. Yurkovic.

With under five minutes remaining in the contest, Alvernia was able to secure the win after keeping the Nittany Lions from tying match. Gerardo Sosa recorded all five of his saves in the second half, while his counterpart Zach Rider made four stops in the first half and one more in the second half.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC contest on Friday, September 30 at 7 p.m.
