Men's soccer earns crucial win over Cobleskill

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team bounced back from a tough setback on Saturday by picking up a crucial 4-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions move to 3-5 on the season and 3-2 in the NEAC, while Cobleskill falls to 4-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.

Berks set the pace in both halves by recording quick scores. Dan Zhmurkin dribbled deep into Cobleskill territory and sent a perfect cross through the box that Cole Mays deflected off his chest into the open net to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the match. The two teams traded three shots on goal the rest of the opening half, but neither team was able to strike pay dirt. A little over a minute into the second half, Trent Moyer threaded a pass through traffic to Cole Fagley who took a touch and beat the keeper with a low line drive into the back left corner of the net to add to the Nittany Lions momentum.

Both the Cole's (Mays and Fagley) then returned the favor by assisting on a pair of goals by Zhmurkin to put the game out of reach. In the 51st minute, Mays inserted a long kick off of a corner that Zhmurkin then headed into the near corner for his first goal of the season. The Nittany Lions capped off their scoring in the 67th minute when Fagley played a cross inside the box to Zhmurkin who sent a blast into the top right corner.

Gerardo Sosa stopped all four shots that he faced to earn his second shutout of the season. The strong play out of the defensive unit of Isaiah Danner, Gordon Daichendt, Tom Ulrich, Jakob Fischer, and Kevin Mondi limited the Fighting Tigers attack throughout the contest.

Berks outshot Cobleskill by an 18-7 margin (12-4 with shots on goal) and held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, September 28 at 4 p.m.
