Women's volleyball splits second day of NEAC play

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up the day with a thrilling 3-1 victory over host Keuka College before falling, 1-3, to Wells College to split a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contests on Saturday afternoon.

In the opener against Keuka, the Nittany Lions squandered a late lead in the first game when a lead of 16-6 and later 24-20 slipped away into a 26-24 win for the Wolverines. Keuka look poised to take the second game with leads of 19-12 and 21-16, but the Nittany Lions clawed their way back for a 25-22 win to even the game at 1-all. Berks then finished off the Wolverines with wins of 25-20 and 25-21.

Three Nittany Lions reached double figures in kills, led by Alexis Horst with 13, followed by career-highs from Megan Lackman (11 kills) and Janae Barlow (10 kills). Madison Wojciechowski recorded 23 digs, marking the third time this year the freshman libero had 20 or more. Horst and Laken Bankert both tallied 12 digs. Megan DeAbreu recorded a team-high three service aces, while Lindsay Amrhein was a force at the net with five block assists. Morgan Schwartz handed out 36 assists to go along with nine digs, three kills, and three block assists.

In the second game, the Express jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins of 25-20 and 25-17. Berks got back into the match with a third set win, 25-17, but Wells clinched the victory with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth game.

Lackman and Horst both recorded eight kills, while Samantha Gonzalez added seven. Berks had six players reach double figures in digs with Wojciechowski recording 24 which topped her previous season-high recorded earlier in the day against Keuka. Bankert also had a season-high with 20 digs, while Cristine Humer and Horst had 18. Lackman (13) and Schwartz (12) also had double digit digs. Schwartz dished out 33 assists to raise her season total to 402. DeAbreu and Bankert each recorded two service aces.

The Nittany Lions return to action when they host Ursinus College in a non-conference contest on Thursday, September 29 at 7 p.m.
