Nittany Lions sweep home tri-match

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team downed Marywood University, 3-0, and Albright College, 3-1, to pick up a home sweep in a tri-match at Beaver Community Center on Monday evening.

The Nittany Lions, who improved to 6-4 on the season, downed Marywood by scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-18. Berks appeared to carry that momentum into the Albright match, where they cruised to a 25-10 win in the first game. But Albright rebounded with a 25-22 victory in the second game, before the Nittany Lions rattled off wins of 25-23 and 25-21 to seal the victory.

In the opener against Marywood, Megan DeAbreu became just the second member in program-history to reach the 1,000 career digs milestone. She finished the contest with seven digs to raise her career total to 1,004 digs, which trails Cassidy Schultz (2012-15) who recorded 1,106 in her four-year career. DeAbreu added six more in the Albright game to put her at 1,010 through three years with the Nittany Lions. In addition, DeAbreu combined for 10 kills and eight block assists in the two games.

Alexis Horst led the Nittany Lions in kills (10) and digs (15), while also adding four block assists and a solo block. Samantha Gonzalez chipped in nine kills, while Laken Bankert recorded 11 digs. Morgan Schwartz tallied 34 assists, five digs, and a solo block.

Against Albright, Lindsay Amrhein and Gonzalez tied for the team lead with 11 kills each., followed by Horst with eight. Madison Wojciechowski had a contest-high 20 digs, followed by Megan Lackman with 12 and Horst with 10. Amrhein had a season-high three solo blocks, while Horst and DeAbreu each had five block assists. Schwartz tallied 41 assists to go along with seven digs and two service aces, while Bankert recorded a team-best four service aces.

The Nittany Lions will open up conference play with a trip to New York this weekend. They will play Cazenovia College on Friday, September 23, followed by host Keuka College (host) and Wells College on Saturday.
