Men's soccer earns shutout over Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team picked up its first shutout of the season with its 3-0 victory over Cazenovia College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Christakos Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 2-3 in overall and 2-0 in the NEAC, while Cazenovia dropped to 1-4 on the year and 0-3 in conference action.

T.J. Yurkovic did not waste any time getting Berks on the scoreboard, as he netted a goal at the 4:32 mark of the opening period to put the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0. Dan Zhmurkin added the assist on the play. Yurkovic, who scored twice including the game winner against Bryn Athyn College, raised his season team leading total to three goals.

The Nittany Lion offense kept the pressure on the Wildcats with several corner kicks and shots over the next 20 minutes, especially off of the foot and head of Cole Mays. Mays, who entered the game in the 22nd minute, had a header saved by the keeper in the 29th minute and had a shot sail wide in the 30th minute. The freshman midfielder kept attacking and scored an unassisted goal at the 31:09 mark to put Berks up 2-0.

Mays found the back of the net again in the 43rd minute to cap off the scoring for the Nittany Lions. Manny Zavala - making his first start of the season - notched the assist on the play.

Gerardo Sosa made four saves to record his first shutout of the season. The sophomore goalkeeper made on save in the first half and turned away all three shots on target in the second half.

For the game, Berks outshot the Wildcats by a count of 24-7 (17-4 on goal) and held a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks. Cazenovia goalkeeper Tom Nicholls finished the contest with 14 saves in net.

The Nittany Lions will take on Morrisville State College in a NEAC contest on Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m.
