Women's soccer drops battle to Messiah College in opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team battled Messiah College through a scoreless first half and into the start of the second period, but the No. 3 team in the country pulled away as the Falcons picked up a 3-0 victory in the Thursday evening's non-conference contest.

The Falcons (1-0) tested the Nittany Lions early in the contest. Paige Elmy collected a save in the second minute, Brennan Moyer recorded a defensive save off of a corner kick in the fourth minute. Berks remained calm worked the ball down to their offensive end and Dana Sarcinello put a ball on target, but the Messiah keeper was there to make the save at the 6:30 mark of the opening half. Messiah managed two more shots on goal that were stopped by Elmy over the next five minutes, before both teams exchanged possessions mostly in the midfield.

In the second half, Messiah got on the board in the 53rd minute after a breakdown in the midfield led to a low one hopper sneaking through the left side of the goal. Less than a minute later, the Nittany Lions responded by methodically moving down the field with a shot by Sarcinello sailing just wide of the goal. The Falcons relentless offensive attack led to goals in the 72nd and 78th minute.

Elmy finished the contest with 11 saves, matching her personal-best she recorded in last season's NCAA Regional contest against William Smith College. The defensive unit of Moyer, Shelby Baker, Karina Raykova, and Charlotte Pizzuto gave the Nittany Lions a stellar effort going against one of top teams in the country.

Berks will continue its string of non-conference contests against stiff regional competition when they host Misericordia University on Sunday, September 4 at 2 p.m.on the Turf Field.
