Men's soccer falls to Wilkes in opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to Wilkes University in the 2016 season opener on Thursday afternoon.

The Colonels (1-0) tallied their first goal late in the opening half and opened up the second period with a quick goal to take control of the game. The final score came in the 76th minute to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Bryan Franco had a great scoring opportunity on a breakaway in the first half, but Wilkes goalkeeper Tim Gallagher made a diving effort that knocked the ball out of the box before Franco could take the shot. Freshman Cole Mays had a pair of shots on goal, but neither were able to find the back of the net. Dan Zhmurkin had the other shot on goal for the

Goalkeeper Gerardo Sosa played solid in net for the Nittany Lions with six saves, one shy of matching his career-high. The sophomore keepers made a handful of diving saves, unfortunately for him the Colonels turned to of those into goals off of rebounds.

Wilkes managed 15 shots (nine on goal) and had four corner, while the PSB took six shots (three on goal) and collected six corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Immaculata University in a non-conference contest on Saturday, September 3 at 1 p.m.
