Anderson earns Rookie of the Year; Ginther and Schultz finish as individual champs

CLARKS SUMMIT, PA - Kianna Anderson was named the NEAC West Division Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year and the Nittany Lions had all six of his players earn a spot on an all-conference team at the individual tournaments on Friday afternoon at the Birchwood Tennis Courts. (Results)

The Nittany Lions had all three of its doubles teams finish runner-up to earn a spot on the All-NEAC Second team, while Cassidy Schultz (No. 5) and Erin Ginther (No .6) were both individual champions in their singles tournaments. Marje Robinson (No. 2) and Caroline Bashore (No. 4) both finished runner-up in their respective tournaments, to earn a spot on the all-conference second team. Anderson won in the consolation match at No. 1 singles, while Tanya White was third at No. 3 singles as both claimed a spot on the third team.

Schultz cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the first round of her singles tournament and followed it up with 6-1, 6-0 triumph in the championship round. Schultz is a three-time All-NEAC First Team recipient after winning the No. 5 tournament the last two year's and winning the No. 6 tournament her sophomore year. Ginther also collected her second straight individual tournament. She battled to the end this year in the championship round, dropping the first set 1-6, before evening the match at 1-all with a 6-3 win in the second set. She emerged as the champion after outlasting Madison Kimball by a 12-10 score in the super tie-breaker.

Anderson is the first women's tennis player to earn NEAC Rookie of the Year honors, which is voted on by the conference coaches. In the No. 1 singles tournament, Anderson fell by a score of 7-5, 6-4 to eventual NEAC Player of the Year, Honora Hegarty of Penn State Abington. In the consolation round, Anderson defeated Morgan Adams of Lancaster Bible College by a score of 8-3 in a pro-set.

Robinson was a 6-1, 6-4 winner in the first round of the No. 2 singles tournament, but fell 6-2, 6-2 to Amanda Shulski in the championship round. At No. 4, Bashore opened up the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win, before falling 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the championship round to Honestee Sphabmixay. White suffered a 6-4, 6-3 set back to Kevisha Hunt of Wells, but rebounded with an 8-2 win in the consolation round.

The Nittany Lions will head to New York on Sunday, May 8 where they will face Colby-Sawyer College in the NEAC/NAC Championship.
