Women's tennis takes down Wells to advance to NEAC Championship

Box Score CLARKS SUMMIT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis squad defeated Wells College, 5-1, in the semifinal round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Women's Tennis Tournament on Wednesday evening at the Birchwood Tennis Club. (Boxscore)

Berks (7-8) will advance to their seventh straight NEAC Championship match and for the second year in a row will face Penn State Abington, who defeated Keuka College, 5-0, in the other semifinal round match. Berks pulled off a 5-4 victory over Abington in last year's title game.

In the semifinal win, the Nittany Lions jumped out to 2-1 lead in doubles action. The No. 2 team of Marje Robinson and Tanya White earned an 8-5 triumph over Kevisha Hunt and Nicole Sanborn in the No. 2 doubles. Erin Ginther and Cassidy Schultz continued their strong play in the third flight with an 8-0 victory over Kamarie Maturine and Kate Wells. The No. 1 doubles grouping saw the Express duo of Brooke Benedetto and Yuna Furusawa narrowly edging Kianna Anderson and Caroline Bashore by an 8-6 margin.

Bashore (No. 4) and Schultz (No. 5) each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 win in their singles matches to put Berks ahead 4-1 in the race to five points. Ginther then won the clincher with a 6-3, 6-3 victory out of the sixth spot.

Berks and Abington will do battle on Thursday, April 28 at 10 a.m. in the title game.
