Baseball sweeps Cazenovia on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team earned a sweep over Cazenovia College,10-2 and 8-3, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 19-9 on the season and 9-3 in the NEAC, which places them in second place in the conference standings. Penn State Abington, who earned a sweep over SUNY Polytechnic on Sunday, remains in first place with a record of 10-2 in conference play.

Prior to the first game, the Nittany Lions honored Alex Doyle, Keeanu Erb, Luke Erb, Tom Grablewski, and Nick Zipay with Senior Day Festivities. All five of the seniors had at least hit on the day and played a vital role in the doubleheader sweep. Doyle had a triple in the first game and then drilled a solo home run in the third inning of the the second game. Grablewski combined for four hits, three RBI, and two runs scored in the two games. He also made an acrobatic diving catch on a line drive in the fourth inning of game one and later had an even better play with a diving stop and throw all the way across the diamond for the final out of the second game.

GAME ONE
Mitch Renninger surrendered a solo homer to the second batter of the game, before settling in and shutting down the Wildcats offense. Renninger scattered six hits and allowed two runs, while striking out four batters in 7 1/3 innings pitched. He improves to 3-1 on the season and has lowered his ERA to 3.13. Tyler Comport fired 1 2/3 innings of no hit relief with one walk and one strikeout.

The Berks offense pounded out 14 hits as five players recorded two or more hits. Pearce Harhigh was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, one RBI, and three runs scored to lead the charge. Cory Fox was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, while John McGarvey finished 2-for-3. Grablewski collected two hits and drove in two runs and Toby Welk went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Zipay had one hit, an RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases.

GAME TWO
Dylen Ziegler chucked his first complete-game of the season after allowing eight hits and surrendering three runs (one earned). The sophomore left-hander struck out a season-high five batters as he improved to 3-1 for the season.

Berks jumped out to a 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Harhigh tripled in two runs and scored on a groundout by Fox. The Wildcats evened the game at 3-all in the top half of the third, but the Nittany Lions countered with three runs off of back-to-back long balls to lead 6-3. McGarvey smashed a two-run homer to left center for his second shot of the season, followed by the solo blast from Doyle.

Grablewski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Doyle was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to York College for a non-conference contest on Thursday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m.
