Baseball splits doubleheader with SUNY Polytechnic

READING, PA - Sean Pavlik came within one out of recording a no-hitter as the Penn State Berks baseball team won game one, 10-2, over SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Wildcats were able to come away with a split after taking game two by a score of 8-3.

The Nittany Lions move to 17-9 on the season and their 7-3 NEAC record places them one-game behind Penn State Abington (8-2) for the top spot in the conference. SUNY Poly 13-16 overall and stand alone in fourth place with a record of 5-3 in the conference.

GAME ONE
Pavlik sat down the Wildcats in order through the first six innings and did not allow a base runner until he missed just high on a 3-2 pitch for a leadoff walk in the seventh inning. He escaped that inning with a pair of groundouts and strikeout, then tossed a perfect eighth inning. Pavlik got a groundout to shortstop for the first out in the ninth and then forced a groundout to third for the second out. The sophomore right-hander issued another walk and then recorded a strikeout, but the batter reached first base as the ball found its way to the backstop. The next batter up was hit by a pitch to load the bases and cleanup hitter Tyler Vyce looped a blooper just over the infield to end the no-hit bid.

Pavlik finished the game with nine strikeouts, marking the fourth straight outing that he struck out at nine batters. For the season, he is 6-2 with a 1.92 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 56.1 innings pitched.

The offense got things going early with a two runs driven in by Zach Reis in the bottom of the first and added another run in the second on heads up base running by John McGarvey after a Wildcat error. Berks then jumped out to a comfortable 10-0 lead after scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after recording eight hits and taking advantage of an SUNY Poly miscue.

The Nittany Lions pounded out 17 hits with Reis leading the way, going 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, while Nick Zipay finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Toby Welk, Keeanu Erb, and Dylan Gallagher each recorded two hits, while Tom Grablewski and Cory Fox each had a hit and drove in a pair of runs.

GAME TWO
Berks got on the board first with an RBI single to right center field by McGarvey to score Grablewski in the bottom of the third. But the Wildcats put up six runs over the next three innings to lead 6-1. The Nittany Lions cut into their deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Poly got both those runs back in the top of the seventh.

Zipay, Welk, McGarvey, and Fox all finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.

The baseball squad teamed up with tennis and softball to host their annual spring Pink Games on Saturday afternoon. The teams combined to raise $232.79 to help benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

Berks will host Cazenovia College in the final home games of the regular season on Sunday, April 24 at 12 p.m. Before the game, the Nittany Lions will honor five members with Senior Day festivities
