Pavlik, Reis pitch Nittany Lions to sweep in NEAC opener

READING, PA - Sean Pavlik and Zach Reis each turned in solid pitching performances to help lead the Penn State Berks baseball team to a sweep over visiting Gallaudet University in the first games of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (12-5, 2-0 NEAC) took the opening game by a score of 15-0, before holding off a late rally by the Bison in a 3-0 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

Pavlik struck out a career-high 11 batters in eight shutout innings of three-hit ball to earn his conference leading fourth win of the season. The sophomore right-hander struck out two batters in four out of the first five innings, and rung up six of the batters looking. Pavlik lowered his ERA to 1.84 for the season and has recorded 31 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched. Alex Doyle worked around a leadoff base runner in the ninth inning with a strikeout and a pair of ground outs back to himself on the mound to secure the victory.

The Nittany Lions provided Pavlik with more than enough run support after posting an 8-spot in the bottom of the fourth and then tacking on four more runs in the fifth inning. They opened up the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first when Luke Erb drew a one out walk, moved up to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a passed ball during Tom Grablewski's at bat. With the drawn in defense, Grablewski was able to easily sneak a grounder up the middle to score Erb for the early 1-0 lead.

In the eight-run fourth inning, Dalton Hughes led off with a bunt single and Pearce Harhigh followed with a walk. Cory Fox then dropped down a sacrifice that was so perfect down the third base line that it led to a bunt single to load the bases. Keeanu Erb got the first run of the inning across the plate with a fielder's choice and Nick Zipay added the next run with a suicide squeeze bunt single. Toby Welk ripped a bases clearing double to right center field to bust open the game at 7-0. Hughes and Harhigh each added RBI singles to close out the scoring in the fourth.

As a team, the Nittany Lions pounded out 18 and drew six walks. Harhigh matched a career-high in hits after going 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. Grablewski, Reis, Welk, and Hughes all tallied two hits each.

GAME TWO

Reis tossed the second complete-game, shutout of his career after seven masterful innings on the hill. The junior right-hander worked out of several jams, but none as big as the bases loaded, one out situation in the top of the seventh inning. With the potential go-ahead run at the plate, Reis kept his composure and recorded a strikeout and pop out to second base to end the threat. He scattered seven hits and allowed just one walk, while striking out three batters en route to his first win of the season.

Zipay picked up the 100th hit of his career with a bunt single in the bottom of the third inning, making him just the seventh player in program history to reach the career milestone. The senior finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and two stolen bases to pace the offense. Luke Erb added a hit and scored a run, while Grablewski drove in two runs.

The Nittany Lions non-conference game with the University of Valley Forge scheduled for Sunday, April 3 has been postponed and a make-up date has not been scheduled at this time. Berks will host Penn State Abington in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 1 p.m.
