Baseball splits doubleheader with Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 7-5 setback to Penn State Abington in the opener, but were able to salvage a split after taking the second game, 11-2, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

Berks moves to 13-6 for the season and are 3-1 in the NEAC, while Abington is 11-16 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

GAME 1
Abington put up two runs in the top of the second inning and added four more in the fifth to jump out to a 6-0 lead, but Berks battled back with five runs in the bottom half to get back in the game. Berks left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth and were unable to get home the tying run in the bottom of the seventh after having a runner on third with just one out.

Sean Pavlik tossed a complete-game and struck out nine batters, while Abington's Matt McDonough matched him with nine K's in nine innings of work.

Luke Erb had a bases clearing triple in the fifth inning and finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Tom Grablewski and Pearce Harhigh both had a hit and drove in a run.

GAME 2
Zach Reis tossed six solid innings to earn the win in the nightcap. The junior, right-hander scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, while striking out two batters. Mitch Renninger finished off the final inning to secure the win.

Berks got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Abington got one run back in the top of the second, but Berks added one in the fifth and then seven in the bottom of the sixth to build a comfortable 11-2 lead.

Grablewski finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, while John McGarvey was 1-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in. Keeanu Erb collected two hits, Dylan Gallagher drove in two runs, and Nick Zipay scored twice.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilkes University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m.
