Women's tennis cruises to another conference win

Box Score KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team earned an 8-1 win on the road over Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions won their fifth consecutive contest to move to 5-7 overall and 5-0 in the NEAC, while the Wolfpack falls to 2-6 this season and 2-2 in conference action.

Berks jumped out to an early lead by taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Tanya White and Caroline Bashore won by a score of 8-2, while Cassidy Schultz and Erin Ginther were 8-2 winners in the second doubles bout. The duo of Samantha Usavage and Tessa Caltagirone dropped a heartbreaker in the No. 3 flight, falling 9-8 after Keuka took the tiebreaker by a 7-4 margin.

In singles action, Bashore was a 6-1, 6-0 winner out of the top flight, while White earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the second spot. Schultz (No. 3) won her match 6-0, 6-1 and Ginther (No. 4) had a 6-0, 6-2 triumph. Usavage was a 6-1 6-3 winner out of the No. 6 slot. The tightest came between Caltagirone and Keuka's Katie Tracy in the No. 5 singles match. Tracy cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set, but Caltagirone evened things up with a 7-5 win to force a third set. Caltagirone pulled out a thrilling 10-8 win in the super-tiebreak to pick up the victory.

The Nittany Lions will host Bryn Athyn College in a NEAC contest on Wednesday, April 20 at 1 p.m.
