Baseball earns split with Keuka in a pair of nail biters

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks baseball team won a 7-6 thriller over Keuka College in the opener before falling in dramatic walk-off fashion in a 5-4 setback in the nightcap to earn a split in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Kuhl Field.

The Nittany Lions now sit at 16-8 overall and 6-2 in the NEAC, while the Wolfpack move to 11-9 on the season and 3-3 in the conference.

GAME 1
Berks took a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning before Keuka used a three-run rally to even the game, but they eventually left the bases loaded. Both teams had plenty of scoring chances down the stretch, but missed opportunities plagued both sides. Tom Grablewski hit a one-out triple in the top of the ninth, but Berks could not get him home. Keuka had a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth and moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but Berks reliever Andrew Hertzog got a strikeout  for out two and after a walk he managed to force an inning ending groundout to first base.

In the extra frames, Berks left two runners stranded in the 10th inning and another one in the 11th. Hertzog was able to set the Wolfpack down in order the 10th, 11th, and 12th innings. In the top of the 13th, Pearce Harhigh reached base on an error by the shortstop with one out in the inning. Luke Erb followed with a double to put runners on second and third base. Grablewski drew a walk to load the bases and Toby Welk followed with a walk to force in Harhigh that gave Berks a 7-6 lead. The Wolfpack escaped further damage by getting a strikeout and a line out to strand three runners.

The leadoff runner reached base on an error to start the bottom of the 13th and advanced to second base on another Berks error. Hertzog kept his composure and got a line out to Harhigh, who then flipped to shortstop Keeanu Erb to double off the runner at second base. Hertzog then got a groundout to Erb at shortstop to end the marathon game in Berks' favor.

Hertzog threw a career-high 5.1 innings on his way to improving to 2-1 on the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed two hits and walked two batters, while recording one strikeout.

Luke Erb finished the game 3-for-7 with a double, triple, one run scored, and one stolen base. Zipay went 3-for-6 with an RBI, a run scored, and stolen base. John McGarvey and Cory Fox each recorded a single and a double with Fox also scoring twice.

GAME 2
Keuka lead 3-1 at the end of four innings, but the Nittany Lions plated three runners in the top of the fifth to go ahead 4-3. Welk drew a bases loaded walk, McGarvey added an RBI single up the middle, and Fox had a sacrifice fly to score the runs in the three-run fifth inning.

Tyler Comport, who made his pitching debut in the bottom of the fourth, shut down the Wolfpack offense with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed a walk in the sixth inning, but finished the inning with three groundouts to keep the Nittany Lions lead at 4-3.

After the Wolfpack tied the game, they had the winning run at second base and with one out. After a walk put runners on first and second, Comport got a strikeout for the second out of the inning. A single up the middle loaded the base and Dakota Skinner was able to single home the winning run.

Luke Erb collected his second three-hit game of the day after going 3-for-4 with an RBI, run scored, and a stolen base. Keeanu Erb singled to lead off the fifth inning to give him the 100th hit of his career.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Polytechnic in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. On that day, the baseball squad will be teaming up with softball, men's tennis, and women's tennis for the annual Spring Pink Games to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
