Women's tennis pulls off clutch road win

Box Score AURORA, N.Y. - Despite playing without the top two singles players in the lineup, the Penn State Berks women's tennis team was able to pick up a 5-4 win on the road over Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions won for the fourth straight time to improve to 4-7 on the season and 4-0 in the NEAC, while the Express fall to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Berks was able to take two of the three doubles matches to build an early lead. The No. 1 pair of Tanya White and Caroline Bashore won their top doubles bout by a score of 8-6, while Cassidy Schultz and Erin Ginther took their No. 2 flight by an 8-2 score. The Nittany Lions nearly got a doubles sweep, but the No. 3 pair of Tessa Caltagirone and Samantha Usavage were edged out 8-6 by Kamarie Maturine and Kate Wells.

The Nittany Lions were able to split the singles matches to secure the 5-4 edge. White finished off her perfect day by taking her No. 2 singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Schultz cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win out of the third spot and Ginther clinched the victory by taking the No. 4 flight by a score of 6-3, 6-0.

Berks will travel to Keuka College for a NEAC contest on Sunday, April 17.
